TRANSCRIPT OF DAKOTA FANNING GUEST APPEARING ON THE OPRAH WINFREY SHOW

Oprah: Coming up, coming up, coming up, we're going to meet Dakota fanning.
She's only 9 and one of my favorite little actresses. More with the cast of
"the cat in the hat" when we come back.
{Opens with a cute scene of Dakota being nuerotic in the cat in the hat}
Oprah: That was dakota fanning. Playing the uptight little sally walden
in the new movie "the cat in the hat," which opens nemember 21. She's
just 9 years old, and she's already had the kind of career that most actresses
work a very long time to achieve. She's become the it kid in hollywood. Mike
says she's a combination of judy garland and meryl streep and she says you just
want to --
Mike: Just bite her
Oprah: Just bite her.
Mike: Hold on. I don't want to break skin. I just want to gnaw.
Oprah: Just a little B. Come on out here, dakota.
{Dakota comes out with the scarf and a card}
Oprah: What a little thing. Hi.
Dakota: Hi.
Oprah: Hi. You are precious.
Dakota: Thank you.
Oprah: You are precious. You just lost some eeth.
Dakota: Yeah. I got them pulled two weeks ago.
Oprah: Two weeks ago.
Dakota: Uh-huh.
Oprah: May i just tell you, i wanted to say to you, that I thought you
should ve been nominated for an academy award for "i am sam."
{audience cheers}
Dakota: Oh, thank. Thank you.
Oprah: That was such an extraordinary performance. It really was. How
long have you been acting?
Dakota: For about three years.
Oprah: Really.
Dakota: Yes.
Oprah: Really. So was "i am sam" your first film?
Dakota: That was my first movie, yes.
Oprah: That was your first movie.
Dakota: Yeah. It was a great one to have for a first one. Yeah.
Oprah: When you looked at it, did you think you were amazing yourself?
I mean, really?
Dakota: I just felt so lucky to be in . Some of the actors in that were
actually disabled, andhey did such a great job, and i had a wonderful time.
Oprah: I want to take a look at one of my favorite clips. Every scene
of yours in "i am sam" is -- (to audience) have you not seen "i
am sam"?
{audience cheers}
Oprah: If you haven't, you should rent that movie tonight. Let's just
take a look. Take a look. You and sean penn together.
{show clip of i am sam}
Oprah: Bravo! Br bravo! Yeah. And sean penn was amazing in that movie,
too.
Dakota: He was absolutely amazing, yeah.
Oprah: And that was your fst one.
Dakota: Yeah.
Oprah: And so nowou're in "cat in the hat." How lucky are you?
Dakota: I'm unbelievably lucky to be in it, we had such a wonderful time.
Oprah: Did you know that m says this about you, thatou are a combination
of judy garland and meryl streep? Did you know he said that?
Dakota: Yes, and thank you so much for everything.(to mike)
Oprah: What was that like? Was it hard not to crack up every day with
him?
Dakota: Yes , it was . I did in between takes all the time.
Oprah: You did in between takes. Because he a always the cat.
Dakota: Exactly. Exactly.
Oprah: What do you have there? (the scarf)
Dakota: I made this for you
Oprah: You made it.
Dakota:Yeah
{audience awwws}
Oprah: You like knit.
Dakota: I knitted it for you.
Oprah: You did?
Dakota: Yes.
Oprah: From the knitting needles of dakota.
Mike: Manufacturer's tag, yeah.
Oprah: Who are you, little girl? Wow! how long have you been - how long
have you been doing this?
Dakota: Well, i do some scarves, because i do knit. These are thick yarns.
That doesn't take me that long this took me about like a week.
Oprah: You've been doing this since you were how old, though?
Dakota: I've been doing it for like a year and a half.
Oprah: A year and a half. Do you knit on set?
Dakota: Yeah, i knit pretty much all the time.
Oprah: You knit pretty much all the time.
Dakota: Yes.
Oprah: Okay. You are an amazing person. You are. I'm so pleased to meet
you.
Dakota: So nice toeet you.
Oprah: So nice to meet you. Okay. ~ Okay. He was discovered on a play
ground and now he's starring with mike myers. Discovered on a playground. Meet
