TRANSCRIPT OF DAKOTA FANNING GUEST APPEARING ON THE LATE SHOW WITH DAVID LETTERMAN
November 18, 2003
(ROUGHLY DONE BY hyyk)

Dave: All right. Our next guest is A.... ( cheers and applause ) talented young actress starring in a new motion picture Dr. Seuss's Cat in The Hat. Opens friday. Please say hello to Dakota Fanning. Dakota! ( Applause )
Dave: Welcome to the program.
Dakota: Thank you so much for letting me be on.
Dave:We're happy to have you. You look beautiful, you're a lovely little girl.
Dakota: Thank you so much. I love your show.
Dave: I notice you've lost some teeth.
Dakota: I had them pulled a month ago.
Dave: Why were they pulled?
Dakota: I had them pulled because i had to make room for my adult teeth and they haven't been coming in and it's been like five weeks. My mom worries about it and every night she pulls my head back and looks in my mouth and, about you the what if they don't ever come in.
Dave: Are you worried about them not coming?
Dakota: Um, I'm not. I'm not that worried about them. I hope they do. Tt, um.... ( laughter )
Dave: I think they probably will.
Dakota: I think they will, too. It itches really bad.
Dave: Your gums itch?
Dakota: It feels like i want to poke my finger.
Dave: I think that means that the teeth.
Dakota: Are coming in, so i feel good about it.
Dave: I'm sure you'll have lovely teeth and a beautiful smile. Even without them you have a beautiful smile.
Dakota: I'm getting used to it with without them.
Dave: But if they don't come in, I think it would be a curse. ( Laughter )
Dakota: Yes. That....
Dave: To have to go through life with that.
Dakota: That would be bad. I'd have to like some permanent thing.
Dave: May i ask about your name, Dakota? I don't know that I've heard that as a first name for a young girl.
Dakota: Actually it's becoming popular now. It's a boy's name.
Dave: A boy's name?
Dakota: Yeah. My sister actually met somebody named dakota that was a boy. But yeah, my dad picked it out.
Dave: I I know somebody named South Dakota.
Dakota: Everybody always asks if I'm north or south. I always say south because I'm from Georgia.
Dave: It works out perfectly then.
Dakota: Yes.
Dave: Now is the cat in the hat movie, your first film? Your first big movie?
Dakota: No, i did uptown girls with brittany murphy and i did "I am sam" with.... ( applause ) sean penn.
Dave: and this one was with mike myers, and the cat in the hat, he's a funny fellow, isn't he? The cat in the hat. He is alwss looking for trouble though.
Dakota: Yes. He's kind of mischievous but he means well and it goes from the beginning, it's good and written this contract that nothing bad will happen and it kind of goes downhill from there.
Dave: But it's all a lot of fun, isn't it?
Dakota: It is. It is a bunch of fun and a great adventure.
Dave: Did you get along with mike myers?
Dakota: I did. He is so nice and just to work with him, it's such an honor and all the people. Alec baldwin and kelly preston and spencer.
Dave: Is it hard work mining a movie like this?
Dakota: I think it was just so fun and so fun to about to the set every day and see the director bobow welch and all the cast next, to go there and see mike was such a treat and to see everybody and to go to the set.
Dave: Do you have like a little normal life, nine-year-old girl normal life?
Dakota: I do. I love to play the piano. I started doing that for about a year, and I love to read.
Dave: Right.
Dakota: I'm reading the lemony snicket.
Dave: I just finished.
Dakota: I'm on the tenth one.
Dave: Brothers and sisters?
Dakota: I have a little sister. She's five.
Dave: What is her name?
Dakota: Elle.
Dave: You get to push her around?
Dakota: We don't really like to push each other around.
Dave: Really?
Dakota: No. We like to play together.
Dave: That's nice. And you go to school, i guess?
Dakota: Well, I'm home schooled and I'm in fifth grade.
Dave: I was home schooled.
Dakota: Oh really? Oh great. ( Applause )
Dave: And are you worried you're getting as much education while you're working on the movies as you would be if were you going to school every day?
Dakota: Yes, my teacher, her name is jan, and she's so great and makes it so fun, and i do. I love school. It's wonderful.
Dave: What is your best subject.
Dakota: My favorite subjects are history, math and reading.
Dave: those are pretty good, history math and reading.
Dakota: Yes.
Dave: What is your favorite historical moment. What do you like best about history that you've studied so far?
Dakota: Right now I'm doing world history and that's really interesting right now I'm doing like the middle east, asia kind of in the middle east. Next I think I'm doing africa.
Dave: This is pretty intense stuff then, isn't it?
Dakota: Yes, it's great. I love history.
Dave: Are you excited about the holidays?
Dakota: Oh very excited. ( Applause ) yes, what i want, i want clip-on earrings because I don't have my ears pierced and i can't get my ears pierced until I'm 13.
Dave: When you're 13, your folks will allow it.
Dakota: 13 is a big year because I can get my ears pierced and i can have a cell phone. ( Laughter ) and then the other things i want is there is this stuffed pomeranian and yorkshire terrier and I want the outfits and carrying cases.
Dave: Outfits for the stuffed animals?
Dakota: See, i can't have one until I'm 12. Can't have dogs. See 12 and 13 are the big years because... when I'm 12 get my dogs.
Dave: But you get real dogs or...
Dave: So in the meantime you want the stuff dogs to practice on.
Dakota: Exactly. And there's this store in california where i live called fifi and romeo, actually. ( Laughter ) and it has all this dog stuff in there and I want all the sweaters and all the carrying cases and all that stuff.
Dave: We have a little something for you. It's not a stuffed dog.
Dakota: Oh, okay.
Dave: but it's pretty good.
Dakota: Okay.
Dave: I'm sure you can get outfits for it. Oh, okay. ( Laughter ) right there. Get ready to be excited. That a buttey?
Dakota: Is it a squirrel? Is that what it is? I used to have a pet chipmunk actually in my grandmother's backyard named chip.
Dave: It's all yours. You can have a lot of fun with it.
Dakota: I can go to fifi and romeo and get an outfit. Exactly. I'll get his own little squirrel carrying case. That will be great.
Dave: Now i want to show people a little bit of you in the dr. Seuss movie.
Dakota: Okay.
Dave: Do you know what we are going to look at?
Dakota: yes, the first time we see the cat in the hat and spencer plays my brother and we're a little freaked out about that.
Dave: Cat in the hat.
{the cat in the hat trailer}
Dave: That's the cat in the hat. Nice meeting you.
Dakota: Nice to meet you, too.
Dave: Good luck for the holidays and good luck with the film and good luck with your new friend the squirrel.
Dakota: I will. This will be chloey.
Dave: All right, chloey. We'll be right back with chef rocco dispirito. (Music)
