TRANSCRIPT OF DAKOTA FANNING GUEST APPEARING ON THE EARLY SHOW
August 14, 2003
(ROUGHLY DONE BY LULU)

[Opens with the clip of Ray and Molly first meeting where Molly breaks her heel> Early Show: And Brittany Murphy and Dakota Fanning are with us this morning, good morning].
Dakota Fanning: Good morning, thank you.
Brittany Murphy: Good morning.
ES: The whole question of this is who's the grown-up and who's the kid, right?
DF: Right.
ES: And you're very grown-up, kinda creepily so.
DF: Well, um, Ray...Ray is more- see like me, I go home and play with my baby dolls and I play with my sister, so...I think of myself as 9 years old.
ES: Right.
BM: She's fabulous at being 9, let me tell you, and embraces every ounce of the exquisite childhood.
(DF laughs)
ES: Looks like you've got a wonderful relationship onscreen.
BM: Oh it was a blessing to be able to work with each other, but then the character, Ray. She's more in control of life.
DF: In control of...yeah, life.
BM: Um, yeah.
ES: (to BM) And you're a mess.
BM: Well, and then, Molly the character I play is completely - has no control over anything, and I think ya know, Ray teaches Molly how to gain control of life, and herself and believe in herself.
ES: Well, there's a very interesting series of conversations between the two of you and I wanna take a look at one and we'll come back and talk some more.
DF: Great, OK.
BM: Okey dokey.
[shows clip in which Molly bites Ray's plastic scone]
BM and DF laugh
DF: That's one of my favorite scenes.
BM: I love that.
ES: Why? Why is that?
DF: Um, because I think it really explains Ray's character, I mean spraying lysol on stuff and when Molly says "kid have you ever been to a shrink?" "Since I was 3." that explains a lot about ya know, the kinda person...um
[BM and DF laugh]
ES: Now, you made this in New York, what was it like to work out on the streets of NY and be here in the big city? Cuz I know you (DF) were born in Georgia, I know you live in LA now...
DF: Right, right.
ES:...but to be in the big city, be making a big movie with a big movie star...
DF: Um, well I had never been to NY before, I had only been like less than a day.
BM: Oh that's right..
DF: Exactly, yeah, not that much time, right so um, we were here for two months and just filming, ya know, just in NY, ya know when you're watching the movie you feel like you're in NY and that's one of the things I love the most.
[While she's talking, it shows a behind the scenes clip of BM and DF in New York]
ES: Yeah, (to BM) now tell me a little bit more about your character cuz you play this person who is kinda at loose ends who is kinda forced to grow up and but you're kinda ditzy...
BM: Oh. Well, ya know it's all your interpretation.
[ES laughs]
ES: Did I go to far?
BM: Not at all. Molly really loves life and um, she has a great love of life and she definitely embodies chaos , she understands chaos, a sort of artful chaos. I think really the message that strikes me and the heart of this film is believing in yourself and terribles things can happen in life, but what these characters, our characters teach each other is something that's priceless, and it's no matter what happens, as long as you have yourself to believe in, then you're gonna be OK.
[While she's talking, it shows the scene of Molly and Ray breaking the plate in the kitchen]
ES: (to DF) I just, I have to ask you, ask you a question. Your 9 years old, right?
DF: Right.
ES: Go like this [smiles REALLY wide]
DF: Yeah... [smiles REALLY wide, and kinda laughs]
ES: You-you-are those still your baby teeth? On the top?
DF: Well, I have only lost 2, but I didn't really lose them, because I had to, they had to get pulled...
BM: Oh!
DF:...and just these two <points to her bottom row of teeth>, and I didn't feel a thing, I actually liked getting them pulled.
BM: Well they came in beautifully. [laughs]
DF: and BM laugh
ES: Well, you can see the chemistry here on the set and you can see the chemistry on screen as well. Thank you so much for being here with us this morning.
BM: Thank you.
DF: Thank you.
BM: Thank you very much, have a great day.
ES: Will do.
[Closes with the first clip of Ray and Molly meeting]
