SCARY MOVIE
from TV Week Magazine, 2005
edited by Claire Rigden
The movie's all about your character's imaginary friend. Did you ever have one yourself?
I had a few! They had really weird names. There was Jessie - that's not so weird - but I also had Tube, Cop and Box. Yeah... it was quite a gang!
Were you a fan of thrillers before doing Hide and Seek?
No. I think it's the first scary movie that I've ever seen, actually!
Was it scary reading the script?
Yes. When I first read it, I had to go downstairs where everyone else was and read it with them! But watching it was worse.
Who were you with when you watched the film for the first time?
Elisabeth Shue (who plays Robert De Niro's love-interest in the film). We were screaming so loud ad hanging on to each other with both hands.
Were you nervous about meeting your co-star, Robert De Niro?
More excited than nervous, I think. He was so nice to me.
Did it freak you out, filming the scarier scenes with him?
You know, it was scary, but a good scary because it (helped) my character.
Did you like being a brunette?
I felt unlike myself... but it was fun to wear the brown wig! I had to wear it all day. I didn't get to keep it though!
You've just filmed Charlotte's Web in Melbourne, right?
Yep. We were there for three months and we saw the penguins at Phillip Island, and we went to Brighton Beach and Luna Park. We had a great time.
Are you scared of anything in real life? Like our good old Aussie spiders?
I didn't see any spiders in Australia. Do they have a lot in Melbourne?
Yeah, the whole country is pretty overrun with creepy crawlies...
Ha! I was lucky then!
What's next for you?
Press for War of the Worlds. I can't (say much), but my character's in a scary situation. Tom Cruise was amazing; I couldn't believe I was actually working with him.
You take a teacher with you on film sets, but do you miss going to regular school?
No. I've had the same teacher for five years. And I think I'd be really bored (in a normal school). I love acting too much!
